On June 14, "No Kings" protests will be taking place across Washington. We know that many of you will be attending, dismayed by this administration's apparent efforts to subvert democracy by disregarding court rulings, encroaching on the separation of powers, and undermining Americans' rights to due process, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. As a multifaith organization, we are also concerned about the administration's threats to the pluralism that we cherish. If you want to reaffirm the power and rights of everyday people in our democracy, you can find information here and Interfaith Prayers by the Kairos Center here.
We noticed that the first prayer by the Kairos Center does not include Sikh and Buddhist spiritual traditions, so we offer this addition, to be included if you like before the last two paragraphs:
Reader 1: The writings of Sikh Guru Nanak say, "Even kings and emperors, with mountains of property and oceans of wealth--these are not even equal to an ant, who does not forget God." (Janji Sahib, Pauri 23). We pray in the Sikh tradition that, "our labors and prayers converge to create a beautiful canopy of dignity, equality, justice and friendship, for all living beings, under the heavens." No thrones, no crowns.
All say: NO KINGS.
Reader 2: With Buddhists we affirm: "Why don’t we pick up in both our precious hands that part of the wounded staggering world soul we’ve each been given to restore to health! In this, the briefest of moments, this brief meeting, our being here together, O now."
All say: NO KINGS, but all of us working together! |
