Washington State Labor Council President April Sims (left) spoke to the House Finance Committee yesterday in support of the Millionaire's Tax, ESSB 6346, on how it would impact workers across our state. Rev. Bob Feeny (right) of Westminster UCC in Spokane also spoke in support of the bill and ended his time with "If you are here for the tax breaks, you are here for the wrong reasons."

Washington continues to have one of the most upside-down tax codes in the nation. According to the WA Budget & Policy Center, Washington’s lowest-income households pay three times more of their income in state and local taxes than the wealthiest households. This is unjust and it is fixable. Moreover, the wealthiest 1% of households in Washington recently received the largest wealth transfer in U.S. history through the  Congressional H.R. 1 bill, resulting in an average tax break of $90,850.

Meanwhile, our state faces serious budget challenges that threaten investments in education, health care, childcare, and other essential services.

ESSB 6346 would apply a 9.9% tax only to income above $1 million per year. About 20,000 of the wealthiest Washingtonians — less than 1% of residents — would contribute. The proposal is expected to raise nearly $3.7 billion annually to:

  • Strengthen K–12 and higher education
  • Expand access to affordable health care
  • Support childcare and early learning
  • Expand the Working Families Tax Credit
  • Protect critical human services

Without progressive revenue solutions like this, lawmakers will be forced to balance the budget through cuts that harm children, seniors, and working families.

As people of faith and conscience, we are called to build a more just and resilient Washington, one where everyone contributes and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
