Our Voices Are Still Needed!

We are delighted that so many of FAN's priority bills passed the legislature in this short session! However, Governor Ferguson has yet to sign many of them and we need to keep the pressure on. Please choose one or two bills from the list below which are important to you and contact the Governor emphasizing that it matters to you that he sign.

(If he neither signs nor vetoes in his 20-day window, the bill will pass automatically into law.)

FAN Priority Bills that have not yet been signed:

  • The Millionaire’s Tax (SB 6346 Pedersen):  Would fund core programs like the Working Families Tax Credit, K-12 education, and health care by taxing annual earnings over $1 million. Also reduces B&O taxes on small businesses. Please urge the Governor to keep the bill as is, without vetoing any parts of it, to maintain critical funding priorities that would support the economic well-being of people throughout our state. See the estimated tax rate changes from MT by income group prepared by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. See also the FAQ document from our partners at the WA State Budget and Policy Center: https://budgetandpolicy.org/resources-tools/the-millionaires-tax-frequently-asked-questions/

The bill-signing event will happen near the end of March.

  • Standards for Law Enforcement Leaders (SB 5974 Lovick): Strengthens, updates, and makes consistent eligibility and accountability standards for sheriffs, police chiefs and other law enforcement leaders. Sheriffs are pressuring the Governor to veto some or all parts of this bill, so it needs our support. For more information about standards across states, go to: State Level Analysis on Police Accountability
  • Create a statewide energy assistance program for low-income households. (HB 1903 Mena). Our partner Front & Centered has a letter you can sign in support of this bill: https://win.newmode.net/urge-gov-ferguson-to-sign-hb1903
  • STEP Housing (HB 2266 Peterson): Would prevent local governments from denying or delaying permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, or emergency shelter projects based on zoning. This bill strengthens statewide efforts to expand urgently needed housing and shelter options. See the fact sheet here.
  • Immigrant Worker Protection Act (HB 2105 Ortiz-Self): Would require employers to notify workers whenever federal officials request their employment eligibility information and disallows employers from voluntarily giving immigration agents access to non-public business premises without a warrant. See the fact sheet here.
  • Require that data centers comply with Washington’s 100% clean electricity law, the Clean Energy Transformation Act. Will also close other loopholes (SB 5982 Hunt). See the fact sheet here.
  • Regulate how public agencies can use Automatic License Plate Readers data so that civil liberties and immigrant communities are more protected (SB 6002 Trudeau). See the fact sheet here.

2026 Legislation Session Virtual Celebration
March 25, 6-7pm

Spring has arrived and the energy of renewal is already in the air! Spring is a season of emergence—a time when quiet persistence finally breaks through the surface. Looking around our region, the signs are everywhere. After a winter of deep planning and a fast-paced legislative session, the civic actions and community events we and others have worked toward are finally taking shape. We are so excited to move into this season with you as we find time to reflect, rest, and simply be in community.

This convergence of seasons is especially meaningful this year. Today, our Muslim siblings celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Eid Mubarak! We celebrate with you and honor your month of devotion. Looking ahead to next week, our Christian siblings will observe Palm Sunday on March 29, beginning a Holy Week that partially overlaps this yearwith the Jewish festival of Passover. It is a rare and wonderful window of shared reflection across many of our traditions.

Amidst these sacred days, we want to extend a special invitation to our virtual end-of-session celebration. Because of your advocacy, we passed bills that protect immigrant rights, expand affordable housing, and move us toward a fairer tax code. These are more than just "wins"—they are direct improvements to the lives of our neighbors, like the low-income energy assistance program, which we established this session. Please join us on March 25 from 6–7 PM on Zoom to celebrate these achievements. Register to join here.

Even though the legislative session has ended, we know that the work of justice is a year-round calling. See below for several ways you can take action this month—from local volunteer opportunities to public witness—as we continue our work for the common good.

Get Involved with the CETCAP Program

There are many ways FAN lives into our mission for just, compassionate, and sustainable communities, and we are excited to announce a new-to-us program for sacred communities who are interested in getting clean energy upgrades for their buildings. CETCAP or the Clean Energy Tax Assistance Program, gives free technical and legal support to any community who wants to learn more, is in the midst of planning a project, and/or is ready to file federal tax forms.

Clean energy upgrades are more than hardware improvements for a congregation--they are tools that can help us deepen our shared values of caring for people and planet. For example, solar panels and battery storage can reduce utility bills and reduce dependence on earth-harming fuel sources while also being a tool to help transform a congregation to a resiliency hub. Ground source heating sources can create more reliable warming shelters and financial offsets from both could go to support additional community needs.

Over the next few months we will be sharing more ways that you can learn about what clean energy upgrades are possible for your community, as well as meet with expert legal teams. If you or your faith community is already ready to learn, please contact us at fan@fanwa.org. Rev. AC Churchill is working with FAN to facilitate these clean energy tools for you. You can also submit an intake form to get connected with our partners at Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) and Washington Department of Commerce.

May we embrace this opportunity to sustain our climate and faithfully steward religious properties!
