As people of faith and conscience, we are grounded in our belief in the sacred dignity of each person, and our diverse faith traditions call us to act boldly and persistently against the Trump Administration's Mass Deportation agenda. In these challenging times, we are grateful for communities of faith and conscience around the state who have been organizing Rapid Response to ICE, advocating for the WA State Immigrant Worker Protection Act, and weaving local networks of mutual aid to support our immigrant and refugee neighbors.
As our resistance continues, the U.S. Senate unveiled plans last week for a new Reconciliation Bill that would provide over $70 billion in funding for ICE and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) through 2029 and $1 billion towards the White House ballroom. This egregious budget builds off the devastating One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) of July 2025, where the Republican-led Congress slashed funding for SNAP and Medicaid in order to provide $170 Billion towards Mass Deportations and hand out tax breaks to corporations and the ultra-wealthy.
We know that funding for ICE and CBP is already traumatizing our communities -- families are being ripped apart, community members are denied due process, and inhumane, private detentions facilities like the Northwest Detention Center are filled to capacity. These policies and agencies that harm our communities are gravely immoral and we will not be silent!
Congressional committees will review the budget resolutions starting May 15 and voting could begin as early as the week of May 18. Join us today and tomorrow as we lift our voices together and call for our lawmakers to invest in our communities, not Mass Deportations!
We are focusing on U.S. House Representatives for this advocacy action. These calls are especially critical if you live in the districts of Rep. Newhouse (WA-04) and Rep. Baumgartner(WA-05) -- both representatives voted to advance the budget resolution for this Reconciliation Bill on April 30. |
