SNAP at 40: Coming Together to Fight Hunger

| By CBPP

Friday marks the 40th anniversary of the 1977 Food Stamp Act, the landmark law that set the framework for the modern food stamp program — or, as it’s now known, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). And it passed because of bipartisan cooperation, most personified by the partnership of Democratic Senator George McGovern and Republican Senator Bob Dole.

In this video, we explain the program’s history, what makes it so effective, and its bipartisan legacy. SNAP's 40th anniversary is a timely reminder that when people on both sides of the aisle come together to make sound policy, they can tackle major issues facing the country.

We'll be celebrating SNAP throughout the week, so check back here and on our Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram feeds for more.
